Standing on One Leg (24"x24")

Balancing delicately on one leg, the dancer mimics the flamingos that peacefully wade in the river, her motions controlled and precise. She does not try to change the birds - instead, she changes her position to set the flamingos at ease. Mutual understanding flows between the dancer and the birds as they enjoy the river together. Two vastly different creatures coexist, sharing the beauty of the natural landscape that surrounds them. The river slowly meanders around birds and human as they enjoy the moment, drawn together by mutual understanding and acceptance. Although they cannot understand each other’s language, they still share peace and trust as they come together. This painting reminds the viewer to tread lightly: you do not have to speak the same language or share the same experience as someone else to treat them with respect and understanding. Solidarity and harmony can be achieved if we simply listen, observe, and coexist peacefully with others.

The Herd (18"x24")
In “The Herd”, both youngsters are wary but curious. Each is poised to whirl and dash to the safety of their herd, yet they are also drawn to one another. The mutual trust between species hangs by a thread as each side regards the other. In this perfect moment, time stands still.

My Territory (13"x19")
Canada geese are a common sight around Vancouver - flocks of them can be seen eating, swimming, and flying in their distinctive “V” formation. They blend into the background and are often dismissed as ordinary waterfowl. However, geese can be very protective of what is theirs, as “My Territory” clearly shows. Anyone who has been accosted by a hissing, flapping, angry goose knows that when a confrontation arises, the smart one backs down and lets the goose win! Equipped with a sharp bill and powerful wings, the goose can transform into a fierce fighter when threatened, although these animals will not attack unless provoked. This sandcastle creator has unwittingly wandered into foreign territory, and his surprise is obvious in his posture as the goose warns him to back off. “My Territory” serves as an excellent reminder to give nature its space and be aware of our surroundings before wandering into danger.

It’s Too Cold(24"x18") SOLD
No matter our age, the water holds a certain mystical appeal. The rushing ripples, the gentle gurgles, and the seductive swirls draw us in, enticing us to come enjoy the cool depths. First, a foot is hesitantly dipped in. The transition from warm air to cold water is always shocking, but still we venture farther. Up the ankles, towards the calves, the lapping at the waist - the water rises up and up, chilling us to the bone. Finally, we are submerged as far as we can go! With a shriek of “It’s too cold!” we turn around, ready to jump out to the welcoming shore.

Summer Day(24"x18") SOLD
The pail has been filled, the sun is falling, and river is quieting down. It is time to go home after a busy day. The viewer cannot see who or what the boy is looking at, but the fading light suggests a parent calling out that the day is over and dinner is waiting. The boy’s face is cheerful, but with a slight twinge of regret, perhaps wishing he had more time to spend playing in the water. This painting reminds the viewer to appreciate the small moments because, like a summer’s day, it is all too easy for them to slip by!

Filling the Pail(24"x18") SOLD
The rushing water races by and the rest of the world falls away as the young child attempts to capture the swirls and ripples in his bucket. Concentration and focus radiate from him as he lowers his bucket into the shining river. The viewer is left to wonder what he hopes to fill his pail with - is it water? Small twigs and leaves floating past? A tiny fish or a little water bug? A net, a pail, and a river are all this young adventurer needs to pass away the hours on a summer’s day.

Focused and Ready (19"x13") SOLD

Focus, intensity, and colour are the focus of “Focused and Ready”. Hockey is tense – full of quick moves and lightning fast sprints. Emotions run high for both players and spectators, creating a vibrant environment in which hopes and dreams can be realized or dashed in fractions of seconds.

The player’s eyes are focused and serious. Hollyburn Huskies pride is clear due to the logo on her jersey, and it is obvious she is preparing to give her all to the game. In these precious moments before she joins the intensity of the game, she has a single moment of calm to gather her thoughts and focus on playing to the best of her ability. Canadian hockey forever!

In the foreground, the player’s eyes are focused and serious. British Columbia pride is clear due to the flag on his jersey, and it is obvious he is preparing to give his all to the game. In these precious moments before he joins the intensity of the game, he has a single moment of calm to gather his thoughts and focus on playing to the best of his ability.  In the background, his focus is brought to the test. Engaged in a clash with an opponent over the puck, his mental preparation is put to the test. The opposing team member is blurry, because all other distractions must fade away in pursuit of that puck. Canadian hockey forever!

Game On (18"x24") SOLD
Did you ever wonder why so many of us love the game of hockey?  It’s because it is just SO MUCH FUN!  It’s fun to skate, to pass the puck, to be with friends.  It’s fun to try your very best to get better and to be cheered on by your team, your parents and fans.  Hockey is exercise, teamwork, and passion, and it becomes a way of life.   They say that with hockey, the most important thing is the size of your heart.

Water Break (24"x18") SOLD
It takes a special inner strength to be a goalie.  They have to be in top mental and physical condition in order to be successful at the game.  Goalies have to focus on the puck for the entire game, even if the play is at the other end of the ice.  This requires intense mental energy. They have to anticipate the play, they have to rely on their team mates in every situation, and communication is key:  but at the end of the day, the goalie is the one who has to stop the puck from going in the net.

Best Friends (18"x24") SOLD

It was another exciting day for the three musketeers to explore Deep Cove. The pals arrived early to catch the low tide and prowl the beach while it was still theirs. Then the cruise was on.  It felt good to make the uncertain voyage, with bumpy waves lapping their sturdy vessel. Mysterious sea creatures with long tentacles lurked dangerously close, just below the murky surface. Tales of pirates filled their minds.

All too soon, they were back on shore, picking their way among clumps of menacing barnacles, exhausted yet satisfied, with fond memories of how buddies shared a journey together.

When is the last time you were able to be alone with your thoughts, free of distractions and demands? In our busy world, this simple pleasure is becoming a thing of the past. We have forgotten that in solitude we can find peace and happiness.  Sitting alone on a mountain rock, the girl in the painting is the envy of many of us. She takes great pleasure in her own company and is able to let her thoughts roam freely. The beautiful Vancouver landscape creates a peaceful environment that renews her, body and soul. The endless sight awakens a sense of curiosity to further explore her own thoughts while celebrating the joy of solitude.

Watch Your Step (22"x28") SOLD
A high mountain offers a perfect view of the city and instills children with a sense of awe and wonder. Climbing up to such a high vantage point requires strength, stamina, and careful footing, but the view from the top is worth the struggle. Once the peak is reached, the city seems to fall away, blending into a sea of tiny buildings, cars, and people. The young girl in the painting seems to be delighted with both the climb and the view, and she is jumping from rock to rock with confidence and ease. Conquering the climb has filled her with a sense of accomplishment and strength, and now that she is at the top, she can enjoy the fruit of her labours. The three images of her represent the climb, the goal, and the future, and all three are equally thrilled with the prospects laid out before them. This reminds the viewer to enjoy their own journey, no matter where they are on their own personal ascent.

Stepping Carefully (24"x36") SOLD

Throughout life, people change, grow, and evolve. As people gain life experience, they become emotionally richer and gain depth and dimension, learning more about themselves and the world around them with each passing moment. They grow from a pale image to a full bodied individual with ideals, opinions, ideas and beliefs. This growth and change starts in childhood, but even as adults they can continue this process of evolution. Navigating through the myriad decisions and situations that life presents, each person is like stepping carefully across a rocky beach covered with barnacles. People must make choices with each step, deciding where to place a foot and how to maintain their balance while always striving to move forward.

People have a choice about how they colour their life. They can choose to become kind and compassionate and enrich the lives of those around them, or they can become bitter, cold, and colourless. Every moment is a choice - how people will act in a difficult situation, how they will interact with others, and how they will influence the world around them. By stepping carefully and making good choices, people can develop fully and make the world around them a better place, through actions both big and small. How will you choose to step?

A Curiosity for What Laid Beneath (24"x36") SOLD

One warm summer’s day, while the cool water drifted away from the shore, a boy searched for the wonders buried beneath the robust terrain. Jagged rocks of all shapes and sizes were nestled throughout the golden shore. As the boy searched and uncovered the mysteries that laid beneath the jagged rocks, he found without prevail his treasure. Curled in his petit hands were crabs, small and large. Despite the laborious task of lifting rocks, the discovery of treasures always evoked a smile across the boy’s face.

Self Portrait - Fully Engrossed (36"x24") Not For Sale

Dating back to the 1880s in England, table tennis was invented to emulate the popularity of lawn tennis by developing an indoor version of it. It is now the most popular indoor sport in the world. One reason for its popularity is that it can be played by everyone - there are no age or gender barriers. Another reason is the excitement of this fast paced game. There is much more to the game than sheer power or strength; an awful lot of quick thinking, planning, and strategizing is happening on the court. This painting captures the clear focus in my eyes as I tense, waiting for my moment to serve and send the ball hurtling across the table to my opponent. Table tennis is not for the faint of heart!

Performance Day Focus (24"x36") Not For Sale

It wasn't my son, Tomson, who was on edge 20 years ago for the United States versus Canada taekwondo yellow belt tournament; it was I, his father who was terribly tense. It was the first time any of these children had competed in such an event, and tensions were high. The sense of excitement and pressure was palatable in the air, and the children chattered like excited birds, pulling faces, fidgeting, talking excitedly. However, despite the pressures placed upon him from teachers and parents, and the added stress of competing in public, my son stayed calm and collected. Ignoring the excitement around him, he sat still, hands outstretched, face calm. Glancing at him, the focus and intensity was obvious on his young face. In a sudden moment of clarity, I realized that I was the tense one, my hands moving almost of their own accord, my feet shuffling back and forth involuntarily. How funny that at events such as these it is often the parents who are the most excited, aching to see their children succeed and dreading the thought of public embarrassment or failure on behalf of someone else.

My son won his match and brought home a trophy, but in hindsight this hardly seems the important part. His outstanding self-control and his ability to shut out the outside world were the important things, and I have tried to capture his inner calm and focus in my painting. The background is dark - it is the children who are important, not the parents, teachers, or expectations placed upon the competitors. Their gis are crisp and white in preparation for the competition, and their yellow belts speak to their youth and inexperience. Although they are just starting on their martial arts journey, they still take the competition very seriously, and their inexperience is no reason to take their sparring less seriously. Each step in their growth is as important as the preceding step, and the calm focus of my son hints at the inner strength that will eventually blossom in the man.
